Jaques Gous
Head P.G.A. Professional, Weald of Kent Golf Course.

My Method
My method of teaching is focused on the needs of the golfer. I start my lessons with a full interview. No advice is given until I have a detailed understanding of why the golfer is here for a lesson. My teaching is directly dependant on the golfer’s goals, learning style, physical capabilities and practice time. I also look over the golfer’s equipment, checking for anything that might hinder their ability to play better golf.

Teaching Style
I cater my teaching style to fit the person’s individuality. Whether the student is a male, female or a child I will adjust to his/her teaching style. My teaching style will also depend on whether the person learns better visually, verbally or kinaesthetically. It doesn’t matter what I know, if I can’t communicate it in a language you can understand.

Fundamentals
Fundamentals (grip, stance, posture) are an important part of my instruction. I also believe the golfer needs to understand the basic concepts of golf (i.e.how the ball gets in the air) before jumping into details. Strength and power are two totally different things in the golf swing. In order for power to occur, certain muscles in the body actually have to be relaxed. And without being relaxed, you will struggle with awareness. Tension and awareness might be the biggest difference between a novice and advanced player. It’s difficult to change swing habits if you are not aware of what is going on.

My Plan
My plan with all students is to teach them to teach themselves. I don’t know what’s worse, not knowing what you did wrong or not knowing what you did right. Ball flight might be all you need for feedback. Ball flight will tell the story. You will have the understanding of why the ball goes where it does. And you will have the intellect to repeat it or change it. This understanding is also the key to removing frustration.

Passion and Integrity
I teach with passion and integrity, and love the challenge of the frustrated golfer who comes to me on the brink of quitting the game. On the other hand, the beginner golfer is one of my favourite lessons to give. Helping a new golfer learn the proper grip the first time gives me great satisfaction. I live for the everyday experiences and people I meet through teaching golf.
